STUART — Jon Williams of Miami led from start to finish to win the inaugural Brianna Cooper Heavenly Smiles 5K Run at Halpatiokee Regional Park on Saturday morning.

Williams, 43, covered the 3.1-mile loop course in 17 minutes, 53 seconds, while Port St. Lucie's Stephen Cortes finished second in 18:48 and Palm City's Dale Ruby was third in 19:18. Cortes, 46, won the masters (age 40 and over) title for his efforts.

In the women's race, Heather Gollnick of Port St. Lucie won the overall title in 19:32, Jupiter's April Flynn was second in 19:59 to win the masters title, and Chenae Jackson of Stuart finished third in 21:35.

A total of 235 runners finished the race, and more than 60 walkers participated in the 1K (0.6 mile) walk. A kids' 50-yard dash was also run. All proceeds from the race went to benefit the Brianna Cooper Heavenly Smiles Foundation in memory of Brianna Cooper of Stuart, who died two years ago at age 11 in an automobile accident.
